ENCE beat MAD Lions to qualify for BLAST Premier Europe Finals
The Finnish team move on to the $500,000 tournament, while the Danes will have another shot at qualification in Monday's third-place decider.
ENCE are the first team through to the BLAST Premier Europe Finals from the Showdown tournament after picking up a close victory against MAD Lions in a keenly-contested series. The Finnish side capped off an impressive tournament run — six map victories and two draws — with a fine performance led by Elias "Jamppi" Olkkonen as he topped the scoreboard on both maps, raising eyebrows not just with his flashy AWP but also with a USP ace to open up Mirage.
MAD Lions' players will be kicking themselves after wasting three clear chances to put Mirage to bed and force a third map. The Danes, who will face the loser of the match between Ninjas in Pyjamas and Vitality on Monday for the last spot in the Europe Finals, looked a bit off-colour in the series, which could have been much different had Frederik "acoR" Gyldstrand not produced a stellar performance to keep his team in it even during some tough periods.
The Danish AWPer took control of proceedings and set the tempo as MAD Lions romped to a 5-2 lead on the CT side of Train after shutting down any chances of ENCE stringing rounds together. The Finnish side then picked up the pace to grab a 7-6 advantage before the final two rounds of the half went the way of the Danes.

acoR, who had ended the previous half with 20 frags, pulled off a miraculous 1v4 clutch in the ensuing pistol round to put MAD Lions back in the driving seat at the start of the half. The Danish team went on a solid run, increasing their lead to 12-7, but then a successful force-buy marked the beginning of a great comeback from ENCE. The Finnish team tightened up and took the upper hand, shutting out the MAD Lions offense for the rest of the game to take the lead in the series.
ENCE picked up where they left off and took the lead on Mirage off of a pistol ace by Jamppi. MAD Lions struggled to find a footing in the game as any round that they won was immediately traded back by their opponents, who cruised to an 11-4 lead with a dominant CT display that saw three of the team's players average over 110 damage per round.
Now playing on the T side, ENCE added to their lead with a pistol round that ended with a knife kill by Aleksi "allu" Jalli. With confidence rippling through the Finnish players and the team enjoying a commanding 12-4 lead, it looked as though the game was a foregone conclusion, but MAD Lions began to eat away at the deficit after winning a force-buy.
MAD Lions enjoyed a spell of dominance as they kept ENCE's players at bay with their water-tight defense, but they could not land the finishing blow as Miikka "suNny" Kemppi and allu rescued the Finnish team in the final two rounds of regulation, forcing overtime. The Danes were in a clear position to win the first set of extra rounds before Jani "Aerial" Jussila pulled off a triple-kill spraydown with a UMP in a 3v5 situation, setting his team up for a 2v2 retake that they ended up winning. That round broke MAD Lions' spirits once and for all as they were unable to post a single round in the following overtime.
